Te Rerenga: June 2026 edition – Expanding access and celebrating local impact

Welcome to the June 2026 edition of Te Rerenga. This issue highlights how locally led primary care continues to improve access to health services across the Bay of Plenty through innovation, partnership and community leadership.

The edition leads with Mental Health Minister Hon Matt Doocey’s visit to BeingWell, where he saw first-hand the programme’s growth and impact. We share how the service has expanded its reach, the difference Health Improvement Practitioners and Health Coaches are making, and why integrated support in general practice is improving outcomes for patients.

You will also read about the launch of Bridging the Gap, a new outreach pilot delivering free health care to whānau experiencing homelessness or housing stress, and rangatahi who may otherwise miss out on care. The issue also covers the announcement that future medical students will complete part of their training in the Western Bay of Plenty from 2029, alongside a new gender-affirming primary care programme that will improve access across the region.

This edition also celebrates people making a lasting contribution to health in our communities, including Edward Matehaere’s national volunteer award and Janice Kuka’s appointment as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Te Rerenga is WBOP PHO’s quarterly newsletter. It celebrates the work of our kaimahi, general practice, iwi partners and community services across the Bay of Plenty. It is a place to share learning, recognise contribution and reflect on what matters in primary care. Published quarterly, Te Rerenga brings together stories that reflect the heart of our health network.
